MELACIN

MELACIN

Flupentixol & Melitracen

Melacin (Flupentixol & Melitracen Tablets) combines two mood-modulating medicines often used for mixed anxiety and depressive states. Flupentixol, a thioxanthene given in very low doses, gently balances dopamine and serotonin activity in the brain. This can lift energy, reduce inner tension and improve motivation without heavy sedation. Melitracen is a tricyclic antidepressant that increases the availability of noradrenaline and serotonin by inhibiting their reuptake, which helps stabilize mood, sleep and appetite. Together, the pair targets both anxious distress and low mood, and many patients notice early symptom relief when the combination is taken as prescribed. Some people may experience temporary effects such as dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, tremor, restlessness, sleepiness or difficulty sleeping, nausea or blurred vision. Take the medicine exactly as directed and speak with your doctor if side effects persist or become troublesome.

Melacin is used under medical supervision for the treatment of depression with anxiety, mixed anxiety-depressive disorder, and related psychosomatic symptoms where tension, worry, low mood and poor sleep occur together. Clinicians may consider it for short- to medium-term therapy when rapid symptom control is needed, with ongoing evaluation of benefit and tolerability. Use for any other condition should be on a doctor’s advice.

Adults commonly start with one tablet in the morning and one at midday. Your doctor may adjust the dose based on response; in some cases the morning dose may be increased. Because the flupentixol component can be activating, evening doses are generally avoided to protect sleep. Elderly patients or those with medical comorbidities may require lower doses. It is not recommended for children or adolescents unless a specialist advises otherwise. Swallow the tablet with water and do not crush or chew it. Do not stop abruptly unless your doctor tells you to; a gradual reduction may be needed. Symptom improvement may be seen within one to two weeks, with further gains over several weeks.

Storage: Store Melacin in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Common Side Effects: The most reported effects are dry mouth, constipation, dizziness or light-headedness, drowsiness or insomnia, sweating, tremor, blurred vision and nausea. Postural faintness, palpitations or changes in heart rhythm are uncommon but require medical attention. Very rare but serious reactions such as high fever with muscle stiffness, severe confusion, uncontrolled movements, or new/worsening mood changes should be treated as urgent.

Drug Warnings: Before taking Melacin, inform your doctor if you have high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems or a family history of long QT, thyroid disease, glaucoma or prostate enlargement, epilepsy or seizure history, liver or kidney problems, or a history of bipolar disorder/mania. Avoid taking this medicine with other sedating medications unless advised, as it may increase drowsiness.

Drug–Drug Interactions: Melacin may interact with certain medications, including MAO inhibitors (do not combine or use within 14 days), other antidepressants or serotonergic drugs, antipsychotics, sleep medicines, opioids, benzodiazepines, antihistamines, medicines that prolong the QT interval, strong blood-pressure medicines, and agents that affect liver enzymes. It may also reduce the effect of levodopa. Always tell your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter drugs and supplements you are taking.

Drug–Food Interactions: The medicine can be taken with or without food. Limit or avoid alcohol while on Melacin, as it may increase sleepiness, dizziness or impaired alertness.

Drug–Disease Interactions: Patients with heart disease or arrhythmias, seizure disorders, glaucoma or urinary retention, liver or kidney impairment, hyperthyroidism, or a history of bipolar disorder should consult their doctor before using this medicine. Always share your full medical history to ensure safe and effective use of Melacin.
